Kanchenjunga circuit trek is a restricted trekking trail of Nepal that is located in a remote area but it is one of amazing treks in Nepal that attracts many adventure loving trekkers to take up the challenge to trek the third world highest mountain. This trail witnesses lesser crowds and allows you to enjoy the unique insight into the rural Nepalese lifestyle, stunning mountain views, experience Sherpa tribes and the Buddhism culture along the way.
Day 1: Arrival. Transfer to the hotel. Evening Welcome Dinner
Welcome to Nepal! Your adventure begins as you step off the plane at Tribhuvan International Airport. Our team will be waiting with warm smiles and a traditional Nepali welcome. The drive through bustling streets bring you to Thamel, you’ll settle into the vibrant heart of Kathmandu. After settling into your hotel, wander through handicraft shops or simply sip masala tea on a rooftop. In the evening, enjoy your first taste of Nepali hospitality with dal bhat, the national comfort food.
Depending upon your arrival time, you can also have a few options for activities. You can relax at the hotel or go out and explore the city on your own or with an English speaking guide (optional add on). Here are some best options to consider:
Explore around Thamel – a colorful tourist hub of Nepal. You will spot numbers of hotels, money exchange, hotels, shops for trekking gears, etc and many restaurants to chose from offering both Western and local Nepali cuisines.
Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is a great place to start your exploration. You can follow narrow alleyways teeming with small shops, ancient temples, and local restaurants.
If you want to stretch your legs, Swayambhunath, the white stupa rising above the valley, is the perfect spot to catch the sunset over the valley. You can also take a cab which is approximately about 15 minutes drive from Thamel if you are too tired to walk.
Visit the Garden of dreams, which is a classical historical garden located at Thamel(about 5-10 min walk). It is an exquisite ensemble of pavilions, fountains, decorative garden furniture, and beautiful flowers and trees.
Day 2: Trek Briefing. Special Permit Preparation Day. Visit Pashupatinath and Boudhanath Stupa.
Detailed trek briefing at your hotel in presence of your trek guide. You can ask any questions you might have. While paperwork is sorted, you’ll step into Kathmandu’s cultural soul. Today is the day for the preparation of a special permit of Kanchenjunga trek from the immigration department.
While we look after the necessary paperwork for permit preparation, you can enjoy a guided Kathmandu tour of popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Nepal: Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple. Today, you will get to know many interesting facts and stories about Hindu and Buddhist culture, history and the people of Nepal from your local tour guide. You can take your own time as you like at each temple to explore around and asking the questions to your tour guide (this is a private tour just for you) for spending your time in Kathmandu.
Boudhanath Stupa is one of the most popular UNESCO world heritage sites located about 11 km from the center and northeastern outskirts of Kathmandu. The stupa is massive mandala and it is one of the largest unique structure’s stupas in the world with a long history. It is the center of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu and rich in Buddhist symbolism.
Pashupatinath Temple is a famous and sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located on the banks of the Bagmati River, approximately 5 km north-east of Kathmandu dedicated to Shiva. You will see many Sadhu monks and the cremations taking place across the holy river of this temple.
Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur(About 50 min). Drive to Taplejung(9-10 hrs)
Wake up early for a scenic flight to Bhadrapur – watch as the Himalayas stretch across the horizon. From Bhadrapur, a long but stunning drive to Taplejung unfolds, passing tea gardens and hills dotted with terraced farms. By evening, you’ll arrive at the quiet mountain town of Taplejung, gateaway to the Kanchenjunga region.
Day 4: Drive from Taplejung to Sekathum
After breakfast, drive from Taplejung to Sekathum. The road winds through subtropical forests and deep valleys where rivers carve dramatic landscapes. Here begins the edge of the trekking world. Overnight at a lodge, where you’ll fall asleep to the sound of rushing rivers.
Day 5: Trek from Sekathum to Amjilosa
Your first steps on the Kanchenjunga trail take you along narrow path carved above the Ghunsa Khola river. Wooden bridges, waterfalls, and bamboo groves accompany your journey to Amjilosa, a tiny settlement surrounded by green hills, where curious children greet you with shy smiles and Friendly villagers.
Day 6: Trek from Amjilosa to Gyable
The trail ascends through thick rhododendron and pine forests. Birds sing overhead as you trek higher into alpine terrin. By evening, you reach Gyabla, where stone houses cling to the hillside, and the crisp mountain air promises the Himalayas are waiting ahead.
Day 7: Trek from Gyable to Ghunsa
Today feels transformative. As you trek towards Ghunsa, prayer flag appear, mani walls line the trail, and the air carries the scent of juniper. Ghunsa is a beautiful Tibetan village of wooden houses, home to red-robed monks, spinning prayer wheels and smiling Sherpa families.
Day 8: Rest and exploration day at Ghunsa
A well-deserved acclimatization day. Explore Ghunsa’s monasteries, meet and chat with locals, and watch yaks graze against a backdrop of towering snow peaks. This pause helps you adjust while soaking in the village’s spiritual atmosphere. It’s a perfect place to prepare for higher altitudes.
Day 9: Trek from Ghunsa to Khambachen
The trail narrow along glacial rivers, cliffs rising dramatically above you. Soon, white peaks dominate the horizon. Khambachen, a windswept hamlet beneath Jannu Himal (7,710m), welcome you with its raw mountain energy.
Day 10: Acclimatization day at Khambachen
A rest day, but adventure continues! Short hike to surrounding ridges reveal jaw- dropping views of Jannu Himal, often called the “Mountain of Terror”, are jaw- dropping. Keep your eyes open for blue sheep and Himalayan birds glide through the sky. Return to Khambachen for another cozy night.
Day 11: Trek from Khambachen to Lhonak
Today,s trek crosses rocky terrain and glacial moraines. The landscapes feels stark yet awe-inspiring as you approach Lhonak, perched high above the Kanchenjunga Glacier – remote, wild, and magnificent.
Day 12: Kanchenjunga Base Camp
The pinnacle of your journey! Trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp (KBC, 5,143m), where the colossal mountain (Kanchenjunga), rises in icy face glistening under the sun. Here, It feels sacred – the world’s third highest peak towers before you in all its glory. After soaking in the moment, trek back to Lhonak for the night.
Day 13 : Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa
Retrace your steps with lighter hearts and memories etched into your soul. Descend feels different – you’ve touched the base of Kachenjunga. And, rest in the comfort of its warm lodges.
Day 14: Crossing Selele Pass
The trail now turn into adventurous as you ascends towards Selele Pass, a remote and rugged section of the trek. The climb is steep but rewarded with sweeping mountain panoramas.
Day 15: Trek from Selele to Cheram
The trail descends through alpine ridges, past yak pastures, into the peaceful village of Cheram. Surrounded by peaks, Cheram feels like a hidden valley of calm.
Day 16: South Base Camp Viewpoint
From Cheram, hike to the Oktang viewpoint (South BC), where Kanchenjunga’s southern face rises dramatically above the Yalung Glacier. Few places on earth feel so close to heaven. Return to Cheram for the night, your heart full of mountain magic.
Day 17: Trek to Tortong
Descend through lush forests and yak pastures, reaching the riverside village of Tortong. The warmer air and greenery feel welcoming after the high, barren passes.
Day 18: Trek from Tortong to Hellok
Terraced farmlands and villages appear as you trek lower and bring you closer to Nepal’s subtropical lowlands. Children wave and call “Namaste!” as you pass. By evening , arrive at Hellok, Your last night in the trekking region.
Day 19: Drive to Ilam
Bid farewell to the trekking trail as you drive to Ilam, famous for its endless rolling tea gardens, Nepal’s tea capital, where rolling green estates stretch as far as the eye can see. The landscape here is a painter’s dream.
Overnight at a lodge of tranquil hill town.
Day 20: Exploration day at Ilam
A day of calm and reflection. Wander through tea estates, tasting fresh brews, and enjoying gentle walks among the green hills. The peaceful charm of Ilam offers a perfect pause before returning to city life.
Day 21: Drive to Bhadrapur. Fly to Kathmandu
Drive to Bhadrapur and catch your flight back to Kathmandu. The hum of the city feels surreal after weeks in remote mountains. Enjoy a hot shower, cozy bed, and a relaxed evening.
Day 22: Free day in Kathmandu
A free day to shop for souvenirs, visit Pashupatinath Temple or Bouddhanath Stupa, or simply relax in a rooftop Café. Tonight, Celebrate with a farewell dinner featuring live Nepali music and cultural dance to celebrate your epic journey.
Day 23: Departure Day
Your Kanchenjunga chapter closes, but the Himalayas will always remain with you. With memories of Kanchenjunga’s sacred beauty, we’ll transfer you to the airport three hour before your flight. As you take off, the Himalayas will be the last to wave you goodbye.
